Where there is a will there is a way! An Inspirationa story of a KAS Officer
Nothing can be an impediment to success if one is dedicated and motivated to succeeded- this lesson cannot be better understood anywhere than in the struggle of our young administrator from Bhadurkote, a remote area of Karnah tehsil of Kupwara district who overcome massive odds, taunts, Criticism and failures to emerge successful in the all important civil service exam. His dedication also proves that being backward geographically does not mean that one chisels his/her dreams to suit the traditional beliefs. Iftikhar Ahmad, the son of a Contractor failed in the Combined Service Examination four times but never lost it. He was there with dedication to do it the next time. He did not get tired of the monotonous routine of failures and rather chose to continue trying with all that he had. And finally he made it the fifth time. Living on the Line of Control (Just 1.5 Km away from the actual LOC) Iftikhar would walk fifteen kilometer to attend Higher Secondary School in Kandi Karnah and later pursued his B.Sc from Gandhi Memorial College, Srinagar.
After graduation, he completed his LLB degree from Kashmir University. ‘’I was selected for Mass Communication and Environment Science also but I felt Law department was a better option for me and opted for it,’’ he said adding that almost after nine years of commencement of cellular services in Jammu and Kashmir Karnah, the remotest tehsil was formally connected to rest of the world. Prior to that the only connectivity was through BSNL’s Landline service which were started here from 1996 and was available to only a few. Having lived his life in this difficult terrain, Iftikhar believes that many faculties which were available to people in other parts of the valley were just a distant dream to people here in this border area.” In winters, we remain landlocked not only in terms of transport services but also the communication are totally cut off,” he says adding that while his journey hasn’t been too smooth, he never bowed and continued to dream big. He believes that his success is a result of constant devotion and support shown by his family members as well as his friends. “During difficult times, I would go to my family members with my head down. But they would infuse in me positive thinking and usher their support. That is the secret of my success.” He began preparing for KAS, in 2009 for the fifth time and yet he felt as fresh as ever. This time, he felt a little nervous as most of the people around him were skeptical about the results. But having resolved to appear for the exams, Iftikhar went on to qualify the exam this time. He expresses his gratitude for ICP where, he says, he received guidance for two consecutive seasons and also met many IAS and KAS officers. This, he adds, kept him motivated and determined to work harder in order to qualify the exam. Being the 3rd person having cracked KAS from his village, he said that while the village has been among the prime targets of cross border shelling, yet the number of KAS officers was higher than the neighboring villages. Presently Iftikhar Ahmad is posted as Block development Officer Karnah.
